Galleons Way

Lower Upnor, Kent

Project Information

The site is a road in the historic fishing village of Lower Upnor, situated on the River Medway. The road served a new Taylor Wimpey’s development at Mariners Way. A man-made slope adjacent to the road showed significant signs of instability, caused primarily by filling at the top of the steep slope.

Some earlier remedial action, involving ballast bund bags at the base of the slope, had failed following significant rainfall caused shear tears and deep fissuring within the slope. Further rainfall continued to lubricate the shear failure through the fissuring, causing the slope to became so unstable that it caused the displacement of the bags onto the pavement and trees which were being monitored on the slope slid down the slope some 100 metres.

GSS Piling was commissioned to design a solution that would stabilise the slope. Our solution involved the design and construction an engineered berm at the base of the slope to prevent further base heave, as well as the installation of a buttressed contiguous bored pile wall.

Geotechnical

Geotechnical investigations highlighted considerable depth of made ground, including asbestos, concrete, steel and timber contaminants, overlying Thanet Sands. Our solution involved the installation of a 26m plan length of 600mm CFA piles to a depth of 11m, reinforced with full depth 10H40 bar cages.

Piling Works

The engineered berm provided an access platform for the 14 tonne piling rig which was required to install the contiguous wall piles. Contiguous piles, 7no. 406/350mm diameter were installed as per the design. Slight difficulties in plunging the pile cages, due to the underlying Thanet Sands, was overcome by vibrating the cages into the piles using a bespoke “top hat” on the cage.

Capping Beam

A capping beam designed to span between the buttresses was installed with additional anchorage ports cast at a 20° rake to facilitate future anchor installation in the event this would be required.
