Aiming to reduce congestion and boost economic growth in the north east, this improvement scheme involved the expansion of the A1 between J65 Birtley and J67 Coal House. The northbound carriageway was widened to three lanes and the southbound carriageway widened to four lanes.

We installed 54 no. 600 mm diameter SFA piles up to 20 metres deep between June 2022 and April 2023. Piles were installed from locations including the A1 carriageway during both daytime and nighttime shifts. The piles were installed using a Klemm 709 with modified mast height to limit rig height.

Infrastructure: Operational Constraints

The site's location and layout presented a number of logistics challenges. Access for the works was via lane closures and platforms created adjacent to the carriageways. The majority of the works were undertaken at night and involved batching plants running 24 hour days to ensure progression.
