For Global Switch’s expansion, we were required to work within a live data centre. We installed case and auger piles with restricted access low headroom piles for new columns that were supporting additional load from the data centre.
Different pile diameters were adapted to and installed using both our Klemm 702 and 708 rigs, dependent on the working space that was available to us. Piles were installed within the existing structure and the presence of backfilled dock meant that up to 12 metre deep temporary casings were needed to seal into the London Clay, while operating within restricted headroom.
Additional measures were taken to deal with contaminated soil and ground gases. We encountered various contaminates dating back over 200 years from when it was a busy dock.
